Mom @ home vs. mom @ job
Before I start let me make it very clear that though I belong to ‘the mom at home’ category, but it is a decision by choice,(hence is not a case of ‘sour grapes’), and not forced on me by circumstances or any living person around.
To the contrary my husband tried his level best to send me out for a job a few years ago…. not for money….of course….but to turn the kid in me…into an actual grown up. His plan was to expose me gently to the harsh winds that blow outside the safe cocoons of my home.
Why was it necessary?? …you will certainly ask!!
So, (for a change…)let me defend him…..
I was a dreamer…a day dreamer to be precise….
From the protective shelter of my parents, where everything was easily accessible to me, I was transferred to an independent abode of my own, where I was responsible for everything, and where again….everything was easily accessible to me.
Now when I sit here and ponder, I feel that life has been pretty polite with me.
Though whatever I got, I got after a lot of hard work, and when not in a good mood I will even whine about the partialities the luck has done with me, but…. yes…. life never left me disappointed.
And so the day dreamer in me would look at everything with the same rosy glasses.
And…..my husband being a practical intellectual wanted me to grow up.
I did two jobs for a total period of six months, and…. then….. I devised a way out.
I actually grew a kid in me…;)
And since then I am a ‘mom at home’ and enjoyimg every moment of it.
Now after this long prologue let me come to the actual topic….of the two, i.e. a working woman and a housewife, who is better, or rather who is considered better by the world at large?
I know what you are thinking….that after such a long build up, I am dragging you into the centuries old debate that working in a kitchen is equally strenuous (and adverse proportionally rewarding) to working in an office. If yes….then you missed my point….I am talking about the different perceptions the people have about the two.
Still for the sake of avoiding any repetitions, I will just summarize my experience I had the last week and leave the musings to you….(which you are necessarily required to post in the comments section of my blog…. I am fed up of seeing 0 comments there…)
So what happened was that I was on my morning walk….and this lady on seeing me….stopped and waited for me to come close….though she must have been in a hurry to drop her son to the bus stop. She told me that she has a good collection of western wears, suits and sarees on sale at her home and they are a good bargain as she will give them to me without the ‘showroom margins’. She asked me to drop in sometime to her home and have a look and asked at what time am I available home so that she will give me a reminder call (yes…she took my number as well…) Now when I told her that I am not working and is at home almost all the time……. my face value suddenly tanked to the bottom….believe me….. I saw it on her face…her enthusiasm evaporated and with those condensed expressions she was hurriedly gone…..to drop her son of course…..
I was left wondering – why did she choose me for that ‘cold call’ initially, was it the new t-shirt-payjamas that I was wearing that attracted her? If that were the case, then that be it.
Though that was the only day when I was able to drag me out of bed to go and meet the greens, I have made a mental note that if the chance comes again I will make sure to go in a good looking t-shirt and payjamas only, who knows whom I might meet next!!!!! And never in a salwar suit….(because this is my personal feeling though..) that people seem to detach freedom and independence from traditional wears.
And…..regarding that ‘reminder call’….. I am yet to receive it….
