the Pinnochio story - I
Last night I was telling Jiya this ‘mother-ised’ version of Pinocchio :-
Once upon a time there was a carpenter. He had no kid and so he felt very lonely. One day he decided to make a kid for himself and he made a wooden puppet with his raw materials i.e wood, nails and fevicol. At that time a fairy was passing over his house and she liked his puppet so much that by magic she put life into it. So, his puppet became alive and the carpenter named it Pinocchio.
Soon Pinocchio grew as old as Jiya. One day he learnt to tell lies from one of his friends. Do you know what a lie is? When someone says something which is not true to avoid punishment then it is called a lie.
He was playing in the garden when he saw one pair of spectacles. Curiously he picked them up and put them on his nose. Accidentally they fell down and broke. Now Pinocchio got frightened and he hid them in the bushes. Soon one dadaji came looking for his glasses and he asked Pinocchio if he had seen them. And then Pinocchio told a lie. He said ‘no, dadaji , I have not seen them.’
The pari who gave him life by magic was watching him and she got angry . Had Pinocchio not told a lie and courageously accepted his mistake, then dadaji would have been spared of the trouble of searching for those glasses and could have got them repaired instead. So, she decided to punish him and waved her magic wand and said
Abra ka dabra curly hose
Whenever this boy tell a lie
Lambi ho jaye iski nose
Do you know what happened? His nose grew by an inch and became long. He did not know about it. Instead he was happy that he was saved from a punishment and he thought to himself ‘wow!!! this is a good idea, unko to pata bhi nahin chala’.
That day he played till late and so reached home late. When his baba ( he called his father baba) asked him that why was he late, he again told a lie. He said, ‘baba I left my game 15 minutes back, the lift came very slowly, so I got late’. And zooooooo….. his nose became longer…..but he still did not know it.
His baba noticed it and understood everything that he was telling a lie and because of pari’s punishment his nose is becoming long.
You know you can not hide anything from your parents. Your mummy papa know you and understand you well, you can fool anyone but not your parents. Similarly his baba understood everything but he kept quiet. He smiled and told him to wash his hands and face and then come to have his dinner.
Pinnochio again was very happy that he was saved from another punishment. He went into the bathroom to wash his hands. But he was surprised why was his baba asking him to wash his face, earlier he used to tell him to wash his hands only. Curiously he looked into the mirror to check if his face was dirty, and THEN he noticed his nose which appeared longer.
Pinnochio got afraid and holding his nose he ran to his baba, ‘Baba, see what happened to my nose, it has become long.’ His Baba studied his face carefully and said, ‘yes it happens sometimes. It happens when some good boy tells a lie. Did you tell a lie?’
Pinocchio who was very afraid and still holding his nose, could not think of anything to say. He tearfully shook his head and said, ‘no baba, I did not tell any lie’ and phewwwwww……his nose forced itself through his hand and grew longer again. It grew so long that now he could see it with his eyes as if it was coming out of its face!!!!!
Can you see your own nose? Nahin na!!!! But pinocchio’s nose became so long that now he could see it with his own eyes!!!!!
So, Pinocchio confessed that he had told a lie and asked his baba to forgive him. But his Baba said ‘sorry beta, this punishment is given to you by pari and now only she can help you’.
So, he went and prayed to the pari. The pari told him to do three good deeds. Do you know why? Because he lied three times.
Can you suggest three ideas in which he can do good deeds?? Think about them tonight and I will tell you second part of the story then!!!!
This is how my story went last night. This is our daily night-time-go-to-sleep ritual which starts with brushing of her teeth followed by her going to the bathroom and then a bed time story after which she usually drifts off to sleep. This is one opportunity which I optimally use to pass on my messages or learnings to her. Recently I had noticed a few of her friends telling lies- sometimes harmless and sometimes not so innocents. And I wanted to control this habit in her in its budding phase itself.
While I was telling her this story, Ankur was watching TV. Once the story was over her attention was diverted to the sounds coming from the TV, earlier the story kept her engrossed!!! Though it was her sleeping time, the TV charmed her and as an escape route she said ‘mummy , toilet aa rahi hai’. Now….now….now…I knew the real reason behind it and so I decided to try the impact of my story. I looked directly into her eyes and asked her ‘really’ and started looking at her nose suspiciously.
You won’t believe, she actually touched her nose and asked with fear and incredulity in her voice, ‘mamma meri nose badi ho gayee kya? Sorry maine apse jhooth bola’.
Before rejoicing at the success of my story I replied, ‘may be, I don’t know. Do one thing say sorry to the pari and next time remember Pinocchio before you are about to tell a lie’. And she did the same. She folded her hands and said, ‘sorry pari! I will never lie again, please make my nose the proper size’.
I can not be happier. I know –now the little charms of telling a lie will think twice before tempting Jiya into their trap.
For tomorrow I have to think about telling her the virtues of good deeds…….
One more thing- next day i.e today, when she got up, the first thing that she did was to confirm from her papa if her nose was the right size!!!!!!
